Until He Comes

Following Jesus' discourse in Matthew 24 he shares a parable that helps us understand how we are to wait for his return. We are to wait for his return with the expectancy of a betrothed bride waiting for her bridegroom!

Love motivates our waiting!!

In our waiting we are to be ready, drawing on the oil (life) of the Holy Spirit.

I was first taught this in my childhood church-home in Langbank singing: "Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning; Give me oil in my lamp, I pray; Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning. Keep me burning to the break of day. Sing Hosanna, Sing Hosanna, Sing Hosanna to the King of Kings!"

This song is prayer of preparation for the return of the Lord based on the Scripture, Matthew 25. It is a song in parable. It's meaning can be understood as a prayer to Father God.

Father God, fill me with the Holy Spirit that my life will be lived for you. Fill me with the Holy Spirit that my life will be lived for you. Fill me with the Holy Spirit that my life will be lived for you; keep my life a testimony for you, keep my life a testimony for you, keep my a testimony for you. Keep my life God-centered to the coming of Christ Jesus. Sing "Jesus saves," Sing "Jesus saves", Sing "Jesus saves" to the King of Kings!

The Scriptures give a number of things which we are to do “until the Lord returns”. Today I want to share six with you that I think are timely. All six are found in the book of Jude, verses 20-23 (I added the italics),

But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

Be merciful to those who doubt;

Snatch others from the fire and save them;

To others show mercy mixed with fear –

Hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.”

1. Build Yourselves Up: While we wait for the Lord's return, we are to build ourselves up in the faith. Faith comes from hearing and hearing again the message about Christ. Be intentional to listen to the message of Christ.

2. Pray in the Holy Spirit. When we pray in the Spirit, the Word of God says that we are built up in our bodies, souls and spirits. Praying in the Spirit builds us up in faith and empowers us to bear witness for Christ.

3. Keep yourselves in God's love: Do not let the enemy steal the assurance of God's love for you. Meditate on the greatness of God's love for you!

4. Be merciful to those who doubt: The Word of God says that no one can come to the understanding of the Lordship of Jesus Christ without the help of the Holy Spirit. We are to be merciful to those who doubt. We all doubted once and are prone to seasons of doubt. Follow the example of the Lord Jesus Christ in extending mercy!

5. Save the lost: Everyone has free will and we must always ensure that we are not using the Word of God as a weapon of control. However, we are commissioned to preach the Word of God to those who are lost. We are commissioned to extend the love of God. We are commissioned to demonstrate the power of God.

6. Show mercy mixed with fear: We are in this world but we are not of it. We must humbly hold ourselves apart from this world's values. We are not of this world, but now, in Christ, we are citizens of Heaven.

Let the love of God towards you motivate you to wait for your Beloved Redeemer!!

This is the final blog in this week's series, thank you for taking the time to read.

If you have never asked the Lord Jesus to be your personal Saviour I would like to encourage you to consider to do so. Perhaps you would consider reading the book of John in the Bible and see what you discover about God, humanity and yourself. I am always happy to hear from you if you have any questions or comments.

God Bless You!!
