1 John 3:18-22 says, “Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other, let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if we don't feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence. And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.”
Have you ever found yourself saying “I should have” or “I could have” ?
Ones I have said before: “I should have prayed more for my uncle who passed away from cancer” ...“I could have visited my grandma more while she was alive”
Those words are tagged to feelings of guilt. That guilt deters me from trying again or doing better in the future. If you think of some of your statements, would you agree?
Here is one story from my life where I had to hand over my guilt to God in order to try again.
While I lived in Eston, SK, I wanted to love people in the community by my actions.I went door to door asking if they wanted me to:pray for them, shovel their driveway, drink coffee with, or play games with them. If all else failed they would send me away, but at least they saw that I cared.
At one door I met a woman battling cancer. She let me pray for her healing and the next day I was told her doctor's report was a bit better than normal!
...Unfortunately, I never went back and she passed away.
I can't say for sure that she would have been healed had I continued to return. But I honestly believe that by taking action and meeting her face to face it would have made a difference.
I felt guilty. But that guilt was holding me back from having the faith to see someone else healed. So I gave God that guilt and I continued to put my love into action.
John says if we love each other then let's show it by our actions. If you're thinking of a friend one day – call them. If you've been praying for a family member in the hospital – go lay hands on them.Because if you don't take action then one day you may regret not taking those opportunities.
So stop saying “should have” “could have”, and start loving people with your actions. And maybe some of you need to hear this today – start praying for people in person.
You're amazing! You carry the love of Jesus inside of you and he's waiting to get going! Love boldly by taking action!
