You have all had a time like this, where you feel pulled in every direction. Wondering if you will get anything done, let alone get everything done. I have recently felt this way. Along with a deep desire to protect all the precious connections of a rapidly growing family, there is the constant pressure of accomplishing all the requirements of my responsibilities in work, ministry, education, and life.
In fact this contribution was one of the things I that looked to avoid. I thought to myself “there is no time for this, pass it off, pretend you forgot,… just get rid of it… you have more important things on your plate.”
That’s when I knew there was a work to be done in me and a need to gain a “heaven” perspective.
As I looked at my day planner and felt stress, the quiet, still voice of the Lord whispered something profound to me.
“What’s up?” He asked me. It had that humorous, somewhat sarcastic tone to it that I enjoy. I laughed.
“As if you don’t know…” I thought.
“Yeah” He said, “Show me where you want my help, and what you want me to do.”
Seems a bit trite and silly, yet totally practical and powerful!!
Matthew 11:28-30 says
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
So, my response was “Jesus, I want your help with all of it. Help me to do it well, on time, and without stress.”
This too might sound trite and silly but there is good reason for my trust in his help!
Jesus said in John 14:6
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life for me. The direction, the foundation, the everyday!
So who is Jesus? Can he help me?
Can he help you?
The great British writer, C. S. Lewis, explained in his well-known book, Mere Christianity, "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher; he'd either be a lunatic -- on a level with a man who says he's a poached egg -- or else he'd be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse."
"You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
So Jesus was either a lunatic, a liar, a madman, a myth. One completely unable to assist me with tasks and schedule; or He really was -- and is -- the Son of God. The One able to help me, to do all I could ask or imagine!
I cast my burden on him and he was faithful to carry it. I have even found unexpected moments of rest by myself and with family that I did not expect.
